Quarter horses are best at those versatility events. Look for a gelding or mare (whichever you prefer) a little taller than 15 hands. It's easier if they're already trained to perform in the event you want to show in. But be sure to ride before you buy. Good luck!

What you need to look at is conformation. You need a horse that is not real tall, 15 hands or so, and short backed. The smaller the horse, although the length of stride is shorter, they can turn those barrels quickly. A good thick cannon bone and clean knees and hocks are a deal maker as well. Use the sites that the others have given you for a start, but really zero in on conformation. Maybe spend some time studying the horses on barrel racing websites, look at their build, the angle of their shoulder and hocks, the shortness of their back and their average height. This will help you rule out horses when you start looking at them. Good luck.

Well, for both of those, you need to find a smaller and shorter horse... by short I mean in length, and I would recommend no taller than 15 hands... Mares are usually longer than a gelding so, you might start by looking at those. Also, look at the horses athletic build... is it in shape? or overweight and fat? Ride it first... does it have stamina? Is it quick? Does it have a tight handle on him? All of these are important.
