they are bottom dwellers & live in dark, muddy surroundings. The whiskers are feelers, to help them find the way.

To help them find food. If the whiskers all point down the fish is primarily a bottum feeder. If the whiskers fan out on either side of the head the catfish will likely eat anyfish that fits in it's mouth.

They use them as feelers to find stuff and to make sure the space is big enough for them. The whiskers are also a defense against predators, they will cause whatever part of the anatomy of the predator that comes into contact with the whiskers to go numb and that way the fish can escape.

Catfish live in dark, muddy waters. They need them to help and know where they're going, along with finding food.

Two reasons:
1.) To feel their way around, as they are bottom dwellers
2.) As a defense mechanism. They can sting you.
