I think mainly because they believe that irony is in fact an adjective likening something to an Iron. And as we all know it was an American who once ironed a shirt while wearing it, and then sued the manufacturer for not putting a warning label in the box for not advising against this cretinous behaviour.

We Americans always have trouble with British humour. I'm sure it is very comical, but the referents are different, and the vocabulary, too.
To "get" irony, you need a frame of reference. British to American doesn't always translate the same.

Americans are adept of Socratic irony.
Socratic irony involves a profession of ignorance that disguises a skeptical, non-committed attitude towards some dogma or universal opinion that lacks a basis in reason or in logic.

Are you talking about the same country that follows Nascar? gee, not sure.
Hey, Canadians don't get it either. Remember "it's like rain, on your wedding day, a free ride when you've already paid" ? The fact that she wasn't singing about irony wasn't even a good example of irony.

In reply to Dutchovenexpert, I would like to add that the english drink tea, rather than eat it.Teatime however is another matter and does involve eating, but rarely involves crackers, not that we don't like crackers..quite possibly a slice of cake and some cucumber sandwiches at 4 pm precisely, served by the butler in our ancient crumbling castles or pretty little cottages..depending on our peerage. You see? It's all stereotype and really nothing to get upset about. If there wasn't some parallel of humour between us and our dear american friends we wouldn't watch their sitcoms and they wouldn't watch ours. Which of course most of us do from time to time.
However I would like to add....that it's only dumb people who think that the english make dumb jokes, because they are too dumb to get it. :)
Not in all cases, but in most, you must concede that the english and irish sense of wit, irony, humour, is quite superior. ;)

You fail to put the ' in don't, and you capitalize irony. Yet you are wondering why aren't smart enough to "get" irony. That's ironic!

You're kidding. Look at that president. I mean, come on. That has to be a joke. He looks like he should be pushing trolleys around in a Safeways car park.
