I do not put cereal in her bottle. Just formula. When can I start stage 2 nipples? She is 5 1/2 months and we try every now and then, but it seems like they are too fast and she can't keep up with the flow. When will she be able to use the nipples properly?

We tried rice cereal to make it thicker, but she doesn' t seem to like rice cereal. She is on solids and LOVES the oatmeal cereal. Woudl it be ok to put that in there? I kind of want to reserve cereal for the dinner table only so she knows she gets cereal at meals in her high chair and milk is in the bottle. But if I can use oatmeal, she may like that till she is used to the nipple.

I'm a mother of three and I never put any of my kids on the fast flow nippels I just left them on the slow flow ones. Same with pacifiers I never switched to the bigger ones. I would like to add that I have 2 happy healthy girls with beutifull teeth they are 6 and 4 and my son is 6 1/2 months and weighs 19lbs.
So I wouldn't worry about changing the nippels.

Babies get used to a nipple very easily, and it is difficult to introduce the second one. Try buying a nipple with a small hole. If the baby is comfortable continue with it. Always try the nipple yourself first. either on the palm of your hand or by sucking on it. see how the pull feels. If you think it is okay for your baby then go ahead, otherwise spoon feed. It is time well spent with baby. Also keep the bottle a bit tilted so the flow is not too much at a time. never let the baby suck air through the bottle.

I know you don't currently use cereal, but it might be a good idea to help with the transisition. It will thicken up the liquid, so she has to suck harder. She's used to sucking hard on the stage one nipples and hasn't figured out that with the stage 2 nipple, things flow faster with less effort. She'll get it, just keep trying. I suggest rice cereal. Easy on the digestion. Are you feeding her baby food yet? You could also add some baby bananas to her formula.

I don't think you really need to but I use the Avent bottles and the nipples that came with the bigger size were stage 2 my daughter had no problem when she started drinking 6+ oz at a time. I still use the stage 1 nipples when she gets only 4 oz after each meal. I don't think it's one of those many things that need to be upgraded.

We just watched our baby, when she seemed to stuggle to feed then we moved up a stage, there is a guidline on Avent nipples.
So, from my own experience we went to medium flow at around 3 months, then fast flow at around 6. We tried the Vari flow kind but threw them in the bin after a few days. If she is having trouble then try her on a bigger size, if she gets soaked or starts to choke (she wont drown) then just put them in the cupboard for a few weeks.
Also what is this thing about cereal in the baby's bottle? Is it a US thing? All our doctors say avoid cereal until 8 months+ And all our dentisits would be appalled if we put it in a bottle for a baby! (UK)

I never used fast flow either, my wife breastfed, however for the first 6 months, then we went to formula for another 6 or 7 months. We didn't use pacifiers, so it was easier to wean from the nipple to a cup.

If you think he is ready. I just knew it was time to switch to faster flow..esp if they are getting frustrated with the slow. Obviously, if you switch and he chokes, etc. it's not time for them yet. It isn't necessary to switch but it may be time. Depends.. def. b y 4 months I was on fast nipples. She's now 6 months.

usually stage two is from 3 - 6 months but if it's plain milk then the hole in the nipple will be too big because milk is watery you should use the first stage nipple and just open the hole a bit

I believe on the pack you buy them in (check them out at the store) it say the age my avent said at 3-6 months. But I would just keep trying every once in a while a when it is easy for her use them

We use to either make the existing hole bigger, or add a few more by using a pin. Maybe you give this old way a try and see what works best?
