First of all, you need to plant a grafted avocado tree in order to get fruit. If you know how to graft yourself, you could even graft a few different varieties on the tree yourself. Even if you get fruit from a tree you plant from a seed, it probably will be junk, not like the kind you get in the store or farmer's markets.

I know a man in Orlando, FL who grew an avacado from a pit. It kept growing for thirty years. It was a great shade tree but never produced any avocados. He was told later that it was a MALE tree bearing pollen but no fruit. Good luck.
