I am a stay at home MOM. After I had my first daughter I was working in the Local Social Services Depart. for 10.00 a day after child care, car payment, upkeep, and clothes because I had to dress. I quit work and the first thing we did was take my car off the road, lowered the insurance, we paid it off, lowered the insurance. Because I was home full time it saved money on daycare, groceries because I was home to cook no more fast food or fast meals. When my next daughter came along ll mo later I went to garage sales and used clothing stores for the kids and myself because I didn't have to dress anymore and the kids grew so fast I couldn't see buying anything new except for shoes and sneakers. When the kids got into school I went back to work parttime at the school as a teacher's aid and had the same hrs as the kids so no more daycare, put a USED car on the road, paid for it with cash, low and basic insurance on it. Worked for about three yrs at the kids school and then decided to stay home permanently. My husband thank Goodness has a very good job and can support us. Our house was paid for when we got married because we waited until we had enough money to purchase it and then got married. I still use coupons for groceries, average about 30.00 savings per week with them, and I go to several area stores and buy the sale items and make my menu's out for the week accordingly. You can do it but it is a royal pain. I never did regret staying with my children. I think the extra time I gave them at home with their studies paid off because both of them are going to a private four year school now for less than 2,500 dollars a year. good luck to you.

Well, what do you do full time and what does he do part time? Also, do you have cable, eat out, or have cell phones? There are almost always ways people can cut costs. Most Americans are so spoiled (me included) that we look at wants as if they are needs, I have friends with 3 kids, owns a home and just bought a 2005 Durango, ALL of their bills and food are under $1200/mo combined.

It's hard, hard, hard. You have to give up a lot of what you want, like vacations and eating in restaurants. It is very depressing. My hubby is an apprentice electrician, and things will get better when he finishes school, but for now...UGH! Maybe you could get a part time job in the evenings when he is home for a while to make a little extra cash?
