What research is needed in the area of reading education?

I'm looking into possibilities for future research, and thought I'd tap into this great resource for teacher input. Thanks in advance! :)

Here's a couple of topics:

Lack of application of current research in the development of the laws driving education... as in, NCLB's expectation of 100% of all children reading at grade level, etc.

Application of researched instructional methods in large-group settings across varied student populations (most instructional methods, especially remediation, are based on 1:1 and small-group interactions rather than large-group instruction).

As a holder of a teaching license in Integrated Language Arts, Gr. 7-12 in Ohio, one area I think that would be fascinating to reseach would be the development of spelling and grammar rules in electronic communication (IM and email), the preferred method of communication for adolescents today.
