It doesn't. I think most of those people aren't actually here for an honest dialog over events and policy. That was one of the main reasons I abandoned about.com's message boards. Most of it was spam traded between people calling each other names.

Because it's a very effective technique. Everytime a leftie must explain that he's not a communist, the casual observer wonders to himself 'Why does he need to explain? Is it because he really is a communist?' On the other hand, if the leftie doesn't respond to the charge, then he must indeed be a communist. Either way, the casual observer is more likely to identify with the other party. The game is over before a debate on the merits of the issue has even begun.
Unfortunately, both the left and right realize this so they both do it. However, I think the right is more skillful at this game.

It doesn't. But it does make for getting headlines, for getting on the news shows, for getting on the cable political discussion shows, or even getting your own cable or radio political talk show.
As long as the American public is willing to buy into this who line of bs it will continue. What a great example is being set for our children by the politicians and their apologists. You don't have to play nice and you can call each other all the names you wish because you don't agree with each other.

Look on the bright side, it sheds light on how extremist the parties that they represent are and the need to vote independent of the party system.

It doesn't although sometimes it helps to get a point accross and "can't we all get along" doesn't really work because we're....humans.
