Why do we sleep at night and live our lives during the day. Who started this and when did it become customary? I figure that most animals that would have been hunted in the beginning of time would have been more nocturnal so activity should have followed after food no? Do you think the world should switch the way it exists and change from active in the day to active at night? Discuss why you think it should or shouldent or if it would be better or worse?

I as a semi sort of human being have always been nocturnal. I see well at night and I hate the daylight. (no im not saying im a vampire I outgrew that years ago) I have just always been more geared toward, and happier when awake all night and asleep in the daytime.

Humans are not nocturnal. If we were active at night and slept during the day, we would spend a lot more energy on lighting, which is why daylight savings time was created.

Well, here's my shot at it.

Some animals are physically well equipped to function at night (think owls and bats with their enhanced senses of sight and sound respectively). We are physically better equipped to function during the day. Our eyes work best with daylight, our moods are significantly improved by the production of seratonin which is produced as a result of sun exposure (think of those with seasonal affective disorder who need sunlamps to not be depressed), and the Vitamin D we need to survive is produced in our skin after exposure to sunlight (although now it is available through fortified milk). We live during the day because that is what our bodies are equipped to do. Living at night would not be a good idea because the lack of exposure to the sun would reduce the quality of our well being.

Because the world in time relation has only recently come to electricity and lighting---and the lighting of one's way to facilitate a life came at extreme expense before electric lighting--so the day was a natural for mankind to adapt at the earliest of time for it facilitated the full functioning sensories that were essential in the survival of the species

the reason we sleep during the night is because our organism is developed to sleep during that time. A region in our brain called SCN (supra Chiasmatic Nucleus) registers the changes of the light from our eyes, and manipulates the brain to sleep (night). However, nowadays we developed the technology to stay awake and sleep whenever we choose to. Just keep your sleep time around 8 hours.

I suppose that since we humans have not evolved to have very good eye sight in the dark it would not only make it harder for us to hunt, but also leave us more open to predators who could see us... even if we couldn't see them. Also, it makes more sense to be up and awake when it is warmer and asleep when it's cooler. I'm not sure if that made any sense, but I sort of got sidetracked...lol Best wishes

We are not nocturnal creatures. If we had to hunt for our food in the dark, the species would have gone extinct long ago.

Humans most likely sleep at night because they're bodies aren't adapt to darkness (poor visibility).
