yes its defenifly the knee and ankle the vet did a flexion test on her and said it was the knee and ankle.

she is just a pet that i ride twince a week just to keep her moving.
she is on pasture 24/7 and is on farriers formula for her hoofs.

i have tried some joint supplements but they don`t work and she ends up taking reactions to them.

Well, until she actually cant get up anymore, or it gets more severe in her trying to get up... I wouldnt do anything... unless she is in pain... You could start soaking her legs in warm water (have her stand in a bucket) a few times a week. This will help some... and possibly keep it from progressing. If you dont do this, or it does continue to progress, I suggest you have your vet come out and show you how to give her shots and injections. When you feel comforatable with it.... then you can start giving them to her on your own which will make it cheaper for you. You could even buy the meds online or through catalogs to get them cheaper. But, I wouldnt do the injections until it comes to that. I also suggest that you only ride her for about 1 hour a week at a walk.

This is a question for your vet. He/she can help you with a pain management strategy. I personally would not put her in a stall. Standing still is bad for arthritis. And if she lays down in the stall, she could get cast (stuck). Your vet can also help you keep track of how the arthritis is progressing and may offer you other options to keep her comfortable.

Some people like to add "supplements" to the horse's diet. Trouble is these are quite expensive and NONE are scientifically proven that an oral form and that dosage will fix the problem. I've seen people pay $125 a jar for Cosequin (who doesn't have any proof it works) and the horses seem the same with as without... but it's up to you to try.

In the long term you'll need to monitor her health. I has a 20 y/o QH mare who got like this as well as becoming ataxic. One day she fell down on some rocky ground and didn't even try to get up. Luckily I was home when it happened. I had to have her put to sleep. I was worried one day she'd get "stuck" on the ground for 8-12 hours while I was out, and that's a really terrifying thing for a prey animal like a horse. You should also be concerned if the horse falls or rolls into a sharp object.

Sorry I couldn't give more help. Good luck with her!

Is it actually in the ankle and knee area or is it higher, say in the hip area. It could be her stifles (sp). Have you had her checked by a vet.

18 is a long time, really for a horse. Maybe, she's done working, if that work was, and maybe it's just her time. Honey, old, well, it's just that. I hate this answer, there is no other. Old, isn't always done, but maybe she's saying, so. God bless.
