My Mom is very active. She loves to gamble, garden and sew. The party will be in Kansas City. Lavender and deep purple are the colors I'm going with.

check out ebay...

a nice party favor might be to put some seeds in an organza bag and give them as a "thank you" to the guests for coming... "forgetmenots" are a nice touch..

A banner could read "For all the lives you've touched, gardens you've grown and for all the sewing you've done, we've always known that we could bet on you..."

Perhaps you could set up pictures or small photo albums on each table (if you have a lot of pictures) of things she's done (like her gardens, her sewing.. family... friends, good times etc..) -this could spark up old memories and conversations at tables to keep the guests entertained... If you're even able to get these pictures sewn onto tablecloths - and just have a simple flower arrangement on them.. might be nice.

Hope this helps... but if not, have fun.. and Happy 80th to your mom!

Lavender and deep purple...very pretty and lend themselves to either a garden theme or sewing theme.

Garden theme is what I'd go with. Purchase deep purple and lavender petunias to decorate tables. Another idea might be to have terra cotta pots with all types of flowers...I love the look of impatiens. This would be inexpensive and neat looking. Check Joann Fabric and Craft on Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee...they have mant garden type items and they had them marked down 80% a week or so ago. Maybe you could have a fountain or birdbath as part of the decorations when people enter the party and present that to your mom as her gift. Are there grandchildren? If so, round them up to each make a stepping stone they personalize for grandma...use small items that are unique to them or small colored stones (Dollar Tree has the tiny dragon tear stones). Cover the tables with your chosen colors. Party City will have a great selection of vinyl table coverings and solid color plates and napkins...or flowered napkins! Good luck...I wish I could help, I LOVE planning and decorating for these types of celebrations!

One idea I've seen that seems to work well is to get some cheap wine goblets (plastic ones) and crinkle up some colored saran wrap , purple in your case, and it looks really catchy as a centerpiece. Either that, or find some lavendar floating candles and fill the goblets with water and float the candles in them. I've seen some flower shaped ones that would work.
If you were really feeling adventurous, you could theme the party around her likes, like having a toy slot machine on the tables or whatever. Depends on the people coming and whether they'd find it amusing or offensive.
Streamers twisted together make good decoration helpers as does raffia unravelled.
Just have fun, I'm sure she'll appreciate whatever you do....

How about "hand-sewn looking" doilies with small potted plants on them scattered throughout the tables (may 2 or 3 to a table, or if the table is round just 1 in the middle), colored streamers down the middle (or around the middle if round) with some glittery table throw stuff that says happy birthday and assorted individually wrapped candies for guests to enjoy? Easy enough I hope!

Go with a nice floral theme. Have an assort of lavender & purple flowers (real ones, fake ones), The place settings can be big blooms (think roses) with the name card in the middle.

If she likes gardening, how about going with the nature theme, with trees and stuff like that. Since she likes purple, how about purple flowers?
