I find augmented chords in isolation a little harsh, depending on the mood you are creating.
In general, they work work as part of a progression through semitones from major to minor.
For example, B major - C augmented 5th - C sharp minor.
That would go well for a piece in the key of E major (Locrian mode) as it all lends from the scale of that key demonstrating progression from the dominant chord through to the relative minor chord.
It is best used in moderation though, otherwise it loses its power in a piece and becomes predictable.
Give it a try and let me know how you get on with those suggestions.

Try the Baroque technique of inversion. That is, use the same chord progression, but reversed: F, Am, G, C. This provides resolution, i.e. you wind up with the original chord, ready for the next verse. Old hat (very old!), but it could still work.

A C Major would sound good before, a C 6 would sound good afterwards, or a D minor.
