If they had a policy about sharing one's faith in public settings, like graduation, then I would have no problem with the school exercising the guidelines of that policy.

With an absence of policy; however, I think they're making a big mistake. I'm not even sure what their legal grounds are for doing this. You can better believe they'll have a policy in place by next year.

Discussing any Deity in a valedictorian speech at a public high school is poor judgment, and perhaps repulsive to some. Yet it does not have anything to do with her grades, which is the standard for choosing the valedictorian.
She is valedictorian because of her high marks and not because she wishes to proselytize all of those that don't share her Dietetic beliefs.
This just goes to prove that being book smart doesn't mean you don't make poor choices and can't recognize it because of ones own immaturity.
The school's point is just as wrong as the student's, in this instance. The diploma should be given with no further incident.

Erica Corder did not harm anyone with her speech about Jesus Christ. She should not have to apoligize for knowing the truth and even if it were not true, she still has freedom of speech. God Bless Erica Corder for her courage and faith. I would be terrified to say something in front of hundreds, never mind my testimony!

I think that she should get a diploma and be commended for her courage.
Why should they withold her diploma? Nobody was injured as a result. And we have the right to exercize freedom of speech in this country, ideally.
I just hope that the staff didn't publicly deny her her diploma. That might be cause for something rude to be said.

it was unconstitutional for the school to censor the Christian valedictorian's message.
as the valedictorian, "she was entitled to the diploma, and the school should not have forced her to give this apologizing e-mail."

You can choose a ready guide
In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice

You can choose from phantom fears
And kindness that can kill
I will choose a path thats clear
I will choose free will

God bless Erica Corder'

I am so tired of Christians being told we can't talk about our faith because "someone" might get upset. What ever happened to free speech? Since her Christian faith is an integral part of her life, she feels blessed by God and credits Him for her accomplishments why should she have to leave Him out of her speech? They should give her her diploma immediately. Shame on them!

I think that schools need to start handing out a little more info on God and stop giving out condoms or info on sex , marriage and violence. That is what is wrong with this world now. Everyone is trying to do away with GOD. Wake up America we need God in America not all of the other things. I think if we had religion in schools we would have less violence, teen pregnancies and all the other things going on these days. LETS start a petition and send it to Bush and get God , prayer and some religion back in school. And give the girl her diploma, she worked for it, she deserves it so GIVE IT TO HER . She is just trying to show she had great and wonderful up bringing. When did God do anything bad to deserve to but pushed out of everyones lives. HOW DID WE GET IN THIS WORLD?????

What is the world coming to? I am not an American, but I scratch my head in confusion every time I see this kind of thing.
(It happens mostly in the States) Why are people made to feel ashamed of their beliefs? 'Political correctness' is becoming a very negative influence in our society. One can't please everybody all the time. What does this school expect her to do to get her diploma? Apologise? Ridiculous.

The school was totally out of bounds holding her deploma and asking her to appologize. She has every right to speak about her faith.
It has become that you may speak about any faith other then christianity in school and that is so horrible.
