I agree with simplyshahid. Paul - I think it depends on an individual's interpretation of the words "soul" and "spirit" As a Catholic the two meant the same to me ie. when we die the spirit/soul goes back to where it came from. I have since delved and investigated sprituality across many themes. The one that strikes me as true is that the "soul" is the divine part of humanity, and "spirit" is the life essence whilst we are down here.
The Brahma Kumaris describe the "soul" brilliantly and do wonderful courses that develop soul consciousness that everyone has. In terms of the "Spirit" world (ghosts, etc) this is something that is a talent that mediums, psychics have access to, ie. it is not a gift that everyone has access to.

Your soul is the energy that gives you existence.
Your spirit is the culmunation of the qualities that you exemplify.
Let's view this like a car. All cars have motors. The motors are in different sizes and types. None of these motors can run without some type of energy source whether it is gas or solar. The motor is the spirit and the gas is the energy. Without the energy to run the car it would be useless.

IRL we treat the two words as interchangeable. However "spirit" is a way of presenting the concept to people for whom "soul" has religious overtones. There is no specific implication that there is any survival after death in the statement "the spirit of Karl Marx" or "the spirit of Nietzsche" but it does imply that the ideas they espoused lived on long after they kicked the bucket :)

A soul is an unchanging transcendental marker of being. it is what makes me be able to identify as myself from one day to another. A spirit is a fundamentally changing part of the self. for that matter, I do not believe a soul, as I have described it, is real, but the spirit does seem to exist.
Now, you may take objection to my disbelief of a soul, but, I am a phenomenologist, so I have to be able to interact with something in some way for me to, in good conscience believe it exists.

I agree with simplyshahid. The soul is our divine self that manifests itself through the spirit. However, I am unable to account for what appears to be the inherent evil nature in man. Does a man with evil desire reflect an evil soul?

Imagine a graphics. in the top is the most precious thing - ur spirit. u cant touch or lose it. if u believe in life after that, this is the thing which continues living. ur spirit is eternal and the same in each life. u cant feel it, it's ur connection with the Great Spirit. the spirit is ur ideas, ur constructive thoughts. on the bottom of the graphics is ur body. it is not important, just an instrument in the matherial world /it doesn't mean u shouldn't take care of it/. and between them is ur soul. it consists of ur feelings, ur character this life etc. of course, these r just my thoughts based on my knowlegde of philosophy and ocultism. :) u r the one who believes or not :P

In my understanding human soul is divine light – the light of creation. Whereas human spirit is the energy of that light. Human soul is like dressed in human spirit. Human spirit shows itself in forms of courage, honestly, perseverance, patience and love. These abstract qualities are known as human attributes - more we have of these qualities more human we are.
There many types of spirits, in fact there can be as many spirits as there are humans. You might have heard of spirits that symbolise cultures, countries, regions and ideologies. Not all the spirits are benign in their nature some spirits can be harmful to life and its purpose.
Human soul is purely divine and human spirit is earthly but it aims for elevation of life and therefore divinity. Whatever spirits we talk about they always belong to this world. They are born as an interaction between our earthly limitations and our heavenly needs to ascend and transcend the physical. There are ample mentions of spirits of all kind in culture of the world. They all symbolise human endeavour and victory over the bestial aspects life. Human soul is, as I said before, the light of creation – the light of God. It is a promise that gives our existence a human form. A form that human spirit adores and serves until it reaches ripens of it being.
We can lose or gain vitality of our spirit but soul is a part of our life that is eternal and constant. When we live a spiritual life that means that our spirit is devoted for the purpose of our soul.
