I need to protect an area that has a cliff where young children need to be kept away.
However, I don't want to ruin the views of the property by putting an ugly barrier up.
Any ideas?

Have you thought of putting a fenced play area on the opposite side of the property? Something similar to the type of in closer used to keep animals and young children away from in-ground pools in the next yard. If you live with a high cliff and want to go natural use unfinished wood or poles. If you want something more modern there are places that make concrete blocks or shapes to order, or go metal.

Iron railings. Fencing with vertical iron or aluminum bars spaced 3 or 4 inches apart. Usually, the metal is painted black.

This won't obstruct the view, will provide plenty of safety, and will look nice in the garden. You can also get various ornamental looks and/or train climbing plants to grow on them for an even nicer effect. I have seen 8' segments on sale at the big hardware stores (Lowe's, Home Depot) or you can search the web for "railing fence" and you will see several hits.
