You could add memory with a RAM expansion card. Just go into your owner's manual (or online with the details of your computer) to find the correct type of memory card. You could also try and clean up your hard drive to add more space. One other thing I recommend is to go into msconfig and stop certain programs that are starting when you boot your computer....these programs run in the background, can be totally unecessary, and slow down your computer's performance. If you're not sure where to go to find these programs.... just go to start, run, and type in msconfig. from there you can click the startup tab, and choose which programs you do not want to start with your computer.

You could also defrag the hard drive and use the other maintanence tools in windows to clean up your computer. Also, try clearing out your temporary internet files and cookies. That usually frees up some space and allows your computer to run faster. Just go to start, all programs, system tools, and choose a program from that drop down menu.

Proper and regular maintanence is always a good idea, and will keep your computer running smoothly... However, increasing the RAM is not a bad idea. If you have a pentium IV, you can usually increase the RAM to 1GB.

Get more memory. This is also called RAM (Random Access Memory) which is used for processes. This is typically the first place people start when trying to boost speed. The more memory or RAM you have the more applications or programs you can have being run at the same time.

Windows XP (your operating system) requires a minimum of 256MB. Modern computers and programs typically recommend a minimum of 512MB.

You could also try purchasing and installing a virus scanner software. I recommend Norton Anti-virus which can be found at http://www.symantec.com/ . Viruses also often cause computers to slow down and many times are extremely easy to remove with this type of software.

Some other tips include disabling pop-ups, increasing you Internet security settings on either Internet explorer or firefox (your Internet browser - the thing you use to get on the Internet), you could even go as far as trying any various cookie or spam blockers. 'Cookies' is a term refered to for files that companies use to track your actions on line - these typically do not harm your computer but overtime you can acquire so many this too will slow your computer down. Try this Lavasoft's Adaware program - you can find it here - http://www.lavasoft.com/ - this automatically searches your computer for these types of files removes them - for FREE!

Computers by nature slow down over time and these are some of the tricks you can do to help speed it back up again. For further assistance I'd recommend taking it to a professional. Just remember eventually all computers pass a "point of no return" where it simply becomes more cost effective to replace the system - for a heavy computer user most systems don't last more than 4 years.

Hope this helped!

There are many possible answers to this, as you haven't directly addressed what it is that's slow (loading programs, web acces, etc.). However, the easiest answer in the end is going to be to add to or upgrade your RAM. Providing more memory for the system to work with will almost always give a performance increase.

Well you don't actually have to download something, you can find it in the control panel, click on performance and maintenance and rearrange items on your hard disc to make your programs run faster and then click on that and it should take about 10 minutes.

Nothing will be changed on the computer, it will just run faster.

Hardware:
More memory (DDR, SDRAM, RAMBUS, etc.), faster Processor/CPU (preferably Dual Core or w/ HT Technology), faster Hard-drive (SATA, RAID, SCSI, etc.)

Software:
Disk Defragmenter - defrag your drives frequently
CHKDSK - run chkdsk to ensure you do not have corrupt sectors on your hard drive.

And do not install unnecessary programs.
