i heard that the italian guy told Zidane that his family was going to die a horrible death and great pain and suffering would be caused to his wife and children. That's what the rumor was according to a "lipreader" that was on a local news station in my area.

The Italian player was choking on a "spicy meat-a-ball" and in actuality Zidane saved his life by giving him a quick head-butt to the chest thus dislodging the meatball from the Italian's windpipe.
So we should all thank Zidane, and give the world cup trophy to france for his heroic efforts.

Because he was frustrated and tired. He has shown this type of violent behavior in previous occasions. Players in all games call each other names, but this does not justify a violent and brutal reaction, especially from the captain of the team or someone who may be considered a role model.
Zidane should be stripped of the Golden Ball Award. Cannavaro deserves that award for his correctness, fair play and superb perforrnace during the World Cup!

Wow...I didn't realize how cultures can be so different sometimes when it comes to sports. This stuff and stuff worse than this is said on the National Football Fields and National Basketall Association court here in America. So Materazzi said something mean about Zidane's sister and mother. WHO CARES....grow up, he was trying to get under your skin and he succeeded.

he was provoked. Matterazzi has a bad rep for doing things like that. Matterazzi was tugging on zidanes shirt, zidane turned to materazzi and said ''if you really want my shirt i will give it to you after the game'' materazzi said, i would rather take the shirt off of your wife. then went on to say ''i wish you and your family a horrible death'' thats what made zidane snap.

Apparently Materrazzi said something about Zidane's mother and sister. (You can imagine what) Zidane should have butted him on his filthy mouth, a red card is a red card!

The Italian said to Zidane, "Hey, if you headbutt me right now in the chest, next week a billion people will ask why you did it on yahoo answers." That's why he did it.

i would like to think i would never headbutt anyone no matter how low their gamesmanship, no matter how provoked... but i know i've let my impulsiveness get the better of me when emotions are high/ when i'm stressed out of my mind and i'm being goaded.
i may not dole out headbutts; but, what i say and do are malicious in terms of intent and desired outcome.
do i feel bad later? ... yes, i do. ...most of the time - whether "official" sanctions are/ were ensued or not.

He was called the son of a terrorist whore!
I would have reacted like that too, but he should have held himself above the comment for the duration of the game.
