Spybot allows you to undo whatever changes you make.
Check out the "Recovery" tab.
So don't worry! If something breaks, you can always restore it to the way it was.

I've been using SpyBot Search and Destroy on several computers ever siince it came out. No problem. Good program, you'll notice an improvement right away.
You should also try Ad-Aware to get rid of adware, and AVG from grisoft.com is EXCELLENT anti-virus protection, and it's free.
To make your computer (XP?) even faster, once a month run PC Mechanic, or something like it. The first time yu run PC Mechanic, it will find about 500 errors in your registry. You'll run much faster after.

It's probably safe to listen to your friend on this one. Besides, Spybot creates a restore point before it deletes anything from your PC. So if you do accidentally delete an important file, you can restore it.

Spybot Search and Destroy only hunts for spyware; any spyware that it finds will be listed it its window. Go ahead and have it remove these.
When updating Spybot, be sure to check (to download) any Tea Timer updates—it keeps programs from writing to your registry. TeaTimer runs in the background and watches for Malware.
Currently, Spybot zaps about 42,000 of the approximately 200,000 known spyware programs. And Spybot is one of the best anti-spyware programs.
Also, when you download updates, you may get a message 'Bad Checksum'--do not be alarmed, this only means that the update data packets arrived at your computer corrupted. This is due mainly because too many people are trying to download the updates at the same time. Try to update later.

I've used spybot hundredes of times, and it's never deleted anything that caused my machine not to run correctly.
Note that if you have software that requires adware or spyware to run (Some P2Ps/music sharing software requires this), spybot might remove that and cause your program to stop working. But it won't delete your personal files and it won't stop your machine from running.

Everything SpyBot finds should be just spyware and not critical to your system. SpyBot also creates a back up of the files it deletes, so if worst comes to worst, you can restore the files.
One thing to be aware of however is that some programs (especially some of the P2P software) requires that you have spyware installed to run (things like Gator and the like). My recommendation is that you find better software, but if you absolutely rely on those programs, keep them.

Don't be worried. Spybot is rated the number one spyware detection and removal software on the internet. I have it and it's great. It will not hurt your computer.
I've tried many others, but Spybot is by far the best.

There's no problem with Spybot. I have been using it along with Lavasoft's adaware for quite some time and have never ever run into any problems
