Guys often kneel to ask their sweetheart to marry them..... why and when did that begin? And, kneeling is even used in certain erotic situations. How did the whole ancient idea of kneeling out of reverence for a diety get linked with love and sex?

i was proposed by a friend of mine.. yeah not a bf but just my friend.. we were talking and all of a sudden he pulls out a ring and says wanna marry me? it was weird and awkward.. i should've said yes..(because he's gorgeous and smart) but i thought it was a joke and it really wasn't ..
oh he wasn't kneeling.. we were sitting on the grass in a park. and there was an old man that kept on looking at us.
