because windows update messes with programs on your computer and the only way for MS to do that directly through a browser is using activeX (which is why activeX is so horribly insecure).

Now, if the Windows developers had been intelligent in the first place, they could have just created a .exe download that would connect to the update server. But, like I said, that would require intelligent, forward thinking developers at Microsoft.

The activeX component that you install confirms two things.
1. Your copy of Windows is legitimate
2. Your system is scanned to meet the requirements of the updates.

Both must be confirm to make your system eligible for current and future updates.

Because the update site needs them to work.
