Three friends are strolling inside a mall. The first person saw a $97.00 bag. But she is short on cash. So she borrows money from her two friends at $50.00 each. She pays and gets the change of $3.00. To reduce her debt, she pays each of her friends $1.00 each. So that her debt to each person is reduced to $49.00 each. Now add $49.00 to $49.00 and you get $98.00. Add $1.00 to the $98.00 and you get $99.00. Now, where is the missing $1.00?

There is no missing dollar. You told the story in a way that was misleading. It doesn't make sense to add up money that is owed with money that people have. The girl owed $98 and she had a bag worth $97 and a dollar, so the amount that she had was the same as what she owed.

Alternatively, at the beginning of the story, the three friends had $100 between them. At the end, they had a bag worth $97 and $1 each, which still adds up to $100, so nothing was lost.

To do it algebraically:

Let A, B, and C represent the amount of money friends A, B, and C, have respectively.

At the beginning of the story, A = 50, B = 50, C = 0
Then C borrows the 100, so A = 0, B = 0, C = 100
Now C buys the bag, so A = 0, B = 0, C = 3 + bag
Now C gives $1 back to A and B, so A = 1, B = 1, C = 1 + bag.

She paid her friends one dollar each which adds to 2.00 from the change she was given back. The only problem with this problem is the last statement "Add $1.00 to the $98.00 and you get $99.00. Now, where is the missing $1.00?" when you should have added $2.00 (one dollar given to each) She kept the 1.00 from the change given back so she still owns each friend 49.00 each.

If it 3 friends then I can only assume that she is one of the friends. Therefore, the friend that made the purchase still has 1 on the dollars.

WHAT IS THIS SO SIMPLE WHERE IS THE RIDDLE?

AFTER GETTING BAG, SHE HAS GOT $3
SHE RETURNS $2, IT MEANS SHE HAS BORROWED $98 ($49+$49) AND NOT $100. SHE HAS A BAG OF $97 AND $1 LEFT WITH HER.

she kept it. she had $3 left over and only gave her two friends $1 each. She would have to get them $1.50 each to get rid of the $3.
