What about in winter in the U.K when its pitch black untill 8am and they start work at 6am! How do they get woken up??

Alarm clocks were invented an American Puritan in the late17,00's. He refused to patent it. Many colonists brought alarm clocks from England to America. in thatcentury.
Clocks were common in the 19'th. century. The barrel type alarm clock was invented in 1877. Victorians had clocks and many were alarm clocks.

Clocks were pretty common in the Victorian era (1830's to 1880's).

Not having double glazed windows probably meant more noise first thing in the morning coming in from outside.

They had servants to wake them up. The servants needed to rise with the sun. Also people were not so obsessed with time as we are today.

I personally never use an alarm clock unless I must get up before 6 am.

Who says they ever got up on time for anything? It's called a routine.To this day I get up exacly one minute before the alarm goes off. I hate the sound of an alarm. It's my routine

They had to rely on their internal body clocks. Wake up, oh it must be time for them to get up!

They'd be woken by a maid or servant, who'd be either woken by the sun or a rooster.

They got up when they got up. They didn't have the strict workdays that we have now. They also had bells that were rung on the hour, I believe.
