Don't know...couldn't tell you...I still say the better team is in 2nd place right now...I'm hoping by year's end they are in 1st but only time will tell...Boston is having a good year so far...we'll see if they can keep that up in the second half starting tomorrow...I can't wait for the second half.
Go Yankees!!

It's only July and the ripples of discontent rumble from Yankeeland. "If we don't win, it's because of injuries" is the story we're starting to hear, the excuse that's starting to circulate. Boo hoo! If it is true the Yankees don't win because of injury they can join the long list of teams in baseball history that didn't win for that reason. You gotta play the hand you're dealt.
The fairy tale assumption about losing "50 plus homeruns and over 200 rbi's" is just that - a fairy tale assumption. It seems to fail to take into account all the production provided by the players who have performed in Matsui's, Sheffield's and Cano's absence. Let's look at the numbers:
Both Sheffield and Matsui have missed approximately 50-55 games. If you project where they would be had they not gotten hurt based on how they were actually performing this year, this is about where they would be now.
Sheffield: 11 homers, 54 rbi's
Matsui: 13 homers, 50 rbi's
Individually their injuries have cost them:
Sheffield: 7 homers, 35 rbi's
Matsui: 8 homers, 31 rbi's
Net Loss: 15 homers, 66 rbi's
Now if Matsui and Sheffield had not gotten hurt, Bernie Williams would've seen far less playing time. And since Melky Cabrera wasn't even on the Opening Day roster, it's logical to assume you would've gotten zero production out of him since he'd still be in the minors. So if we're saying Sheffield and Matsui were playing all year then, in all fairness, we should slice Williams' HR and rbi totals at least in half while eliminating Cabrera's altogether. What does this do?
Williams' totals go from 6/35 to 3/18 and Cabrera's goes from 3/28 to 0/0, a net reduction of 6 homers and 45 rbi's from these two. Now compare that to the missed production from Sheffield and Matsui and this is what you have actually lost due to these two injuries: 9 home runs, 21 rbi's.
What about Cano? Well he's missed about 17 games or so. He was averaging one home run every 17 games and one rbi every 2.5 games. Assuming you got NO production out of his replacements (which, of course, isn't true), you've lost maybe 1 home run and 7 rbi's from him. But since the players who have stepped in have produced something his injury, at least so far, has essentially been a wash.
Now it's true the Yankees have shown grit in hanging close to Boston. For that they should be commended and deserve credit. It just hurts your general argument when you toss wild statistics in the air like so many molotov cocktails. :-)
And let's not even talk about the performance of 3/5 of their starting pitching...

Cause Yankees are a good team they need their star players in but the bench peple coming in are doing great together They are better than the Red Sox...........Howcome 26 world chaampionships won how come the yanks beat up on Boston's pitchers the yankees offense and defense are excellent if Matsui and Sheffield weren't injured Yankees would be in 1st place by at least 5 games they got great backups like Phillips and Cairo are comin' around and they still have Jeter and Arod giambi and their pitching is decent like Johnson is doing well Mussina is the best [pitcher] on the yankees. Rivera is agood closer Procter is a good set up man and so is Ron Villone..............how do you think 4 Yankee Pitchers only gave up 1 hit against the Mets Mussina could've thrown a no hitter if the rain didn' start to get heavier and heavier

The facts in your question answer your question. A healthy Redsox team is three games better than a Yankees team which is mostly in traction. When they get healthy and add a pitcher the "truth" will be known. Did you see Jerod Wright pitch a few nights ago? Redsox fans should start on the Prozac now.
