Agreed.
Ones cultural heritage is history. Birthplace is simple geography, right place, right time. A skin color is genetic.
Sexual preference is a choice. There is no credible proof it's anything different. In this country, we have the freedom to make choices. We have the right to not live in fear, not the right not to live in fear of criticism.
We do not have the right to not be offended. We don't have the right to be accepted or celebrated. No one should have any right to force their choices onto other people or teach children their choices or opinions are any better or worse than their parents.

I personally find the entire thing to be a crock. Gays have every right to be here, and while I personally do not agree with their lifestyle, I'm not the one that has to answer for it on Judgement Day. I think that the issue really has no basis in government, but do think they should be entitled to the same rights and freedoms of choice as the rest of us. After all, this is the Land of the Free or have we forgotten that...
As far as African Americans go, I don't think I will start on the issues that are involved with that topic right now. Maybe some other time though.
I've read some of the other posts and here is my thoughts on the situation. First of all, yes Blacks were bought and sold and beaten...a LONG time ago. Yes there is still racism, but I see it more as reverse racism. Tell me, how do you justify saying that gays struggles are less important than black struggles? Are you saying that you are more important than they? And why is it always WHITE gays or WHITE answers? Seems to me you might need to look at the definition of racism. The NAACP itself is racist. If I were to start a national foundation to the advancement of caucasians, would you be offended and call it racism? If so, then you need to start the process of liquidizing your own foundation. And put whites asides, how about hispanics and Japanese americans? How do you think they feel about not being allowed their own foundation, as its racism?

It's about freedom.
Being black and being gay are two very different things. The struggle for the freedom to marry the person you love, the struggle to have your home and job protected (only 17 states have employment and home protection for gays / lesbians), these are struggles that a lot of repressed groups go through.
After the Civil War, southerners criticized legislating granting equality to blacks by saying it gave black people "special rights". Heard that somewhere before?
It's totally fine to say that the two struggles are different and being black and being gay are not similar at all. However, the attitudes of people that wanted blacks to stay in their place as second class citizens and the current attitudes of those that fight against equality for gays and lesbians are the same.

Gays will use anything and anybody to promote their agenda. I think its insulting to compare the gay sex lifestyle with the black historical struggles in America. Sexual orientation is not in the same ball park as slavery, bigotry, and 400 year old struggle of the black man to obtain equality.
Gays want to force acceptance of their lifestyle on the rest of us that dont agree. They are using the courts to do this, because the court seems to have the sympathetic ear to them. The other two branches of government are standing firm. They know they need more than one branch of gov't to get what they want, so they are playing thier form of the race card to gain support. Black people should be outraged and stand up against this fraudulent comparison. Sexual preference does not equal race. One can choose sexual preference, but one cannot choose race.

You're right that saying all forms of oppression and bigotry are the same is demeaning to everyone involved. I agree with the poster who said that mixed-race relationships are a better comparison. But some people are both black and gay, which gives them both sets of problems. And gays are not fighting for a "lifestyle"; they are fighting for the right to live and love honestly. You're right that dark skin can't be closeted, but the idea of having to be closeted hurts people, too. If nothing else, think of the divorced straight women who have suffered because a gay man they loved wanted to cure himself or pass for "normal".

I will equate the two, when I can see they are the same and I do not see it. A gay person can wake up one day and say OK today I'm going to look ,act and talk like a straight man/woman . They can go where they are not known and be perceived as "straight" A black person cant wake up one day and say OK I'm going to be white today, then go out and be treated or perceived as white..Simplistic thought yes I know but its still true. When that can be done then it can be compared to the black civil rights struggle.

Gay Struggles & Black Struggles in very different, but it is all under the Racism Umbrella. Everybody has been discriminated against in this country, Native Americans, Irish, Italians, Germans, disordors/disabilities, Blacks, Whites, Homosexuals (what about heterosexuals?), Arabs, Males & Females, and Inter-racial dating. Most homosexuals are accepted and no matter where u go theres going to be someone that wont accept it (Same thing with interracial dating and ethnic). Only thing I can say is be yourself, be proud of who you are, do what makes you happy, and get the most out of life, but be prepared for stares & talkers it's out there.

Yes I know it is not the same. But it is politically correct to compare the two. There is really no comparison. But gays and blacks are also both constituents of the same Democratic political party which hasn't told the truth to either group. Blacks dependent on federal welfare are always going to be disadvantaged, and gays really should behave themselves. But that won't get votes. So the Democrats and the media tell both groups what they want to hear in order to get votes. It is hard to be black in America, because of discrimination. But democrats in the media tell the gays the same thing because it it expedient to do so, makes them popular and gets them votes. In light of black history it really is an insult to blacks.

you know I really don't think so. For many white that is the only comparrison they know having never been in that type of situation. I think the only comparrison on any level. Is the abuse taken by the black and gay bashing. however when you looks at the number of both throught history it is not the same.

Good point, and a gay person can usually hide it if they really want to. However being Black is not something you can hide. I agree with that. I think they compare because it's a human rights struggle... although it's still NOT the same thing.

I really wish they would. Being a black women I understand what your talking about. Gay people weren't bought as slave, They never lacked the right to vote. Sure they got struggles to but it isn't big here. Basically their biggest struggle is not being able to wed. I can understand why they're upset. But hey, The ain't working the fields and getting whipped!
