I post questions on her about gay people and I always get a White People Talking about how it was for blacks in comparisson to how it is for Gay people. It's not the same. Straight up a Gay White Dude that can't get Married, or Make out in public or whatever you people do, that is not the same as Being Black and having our history and the issues we face. Blacks fought for our right to just be here, Gays are fighting for tolerence of thier lifestyle. Thats not the same.

Comparing the two is hard as you hide being gay. It's not easy to hide being black.
To me it seems it's better to be gay than black in America. I see more gay characters on tv and in movies.
Now if you break it down to equal rights, you have a point. Blacks still suffered more as we haven't heard of any gays getting hosed with water by police or hanging from trees.

First of all, being gay is not a lifestyle. It's an identity.

Of course it's true that the struggle of blacks and gays have been different. No one is disputing that.

However, there is a very good reason why many gay activists make the comparison when it comes to the struggle for civil rights.

Here's the reason: The exact same discredited rheotoric is being used against gays that has been used against blacks.

Take the military: In the late 40s and early 50s, there was ENORMOUS resistance to the idea of integrating the military. "It'll break down morale! The white guys will freak out! The white guys won't shower with the black guys!"

This is, almost word for word, the logic now being used against gays in the military.

Next take miscegenation. Bible thumpers everywhere railed against interracial marriage for decades, using very similar moralistic objections to is as they're using now against same-sex marriage.

Then there's the "uppity" comparison. It used to be fashionable for bigoted whites to say things like, "I'm not prejudiced, but I can't stand those uppity blacks." What they meant was, they would tolerate blacks as long as they "knew their place."

Many people now have the same feelings about gays. They want all gays to stay closeted . . for THEIR comfort.

So you see the comparisons are quite valid. And I recommend you support gay rights, because it's a sad fact that the black community is MUCH more homophobic than the country at large, making it MUCH harder for young black gay people to feel same coming out to their families and friends.

Be part of the solution!

Very true. But I doubt it. Average white person will not see it that way. Average any person not black will not see it that way. I don't even worry about it. We have been and probably always will be scrutinized more harshly. The world has one set view of black women and black men. I don't let that get to me. I know who I am and who I am not. If ignorant people no matter what race want to stereotype and believe negativity then so be it. Why do you care about Gay people so much. What have they done to you?

You're so misinformed Goober. Gays are wanting the rights not tolerance. We want to have the same rights to marriage so we can have our partners by our side in illness, estates, workplace benefits like health insurance and so on. Because we can't marry, if our partner is in ICU since we aren't recognized as next of kin, we can't see them, we have to hope and pray the family likes us to keep us informed, but we cannot be by our partners side. Is that right?
The reference is that blacks before civil rights were considered subhuman and treated as such. Gays are being treated as subhuman today. This isn't about lifestyle recognition and tolerance. Its about having the same rights and recognitions to our committed relationships as the rest of society is given.
So in answer to your question, no we probably won't stop using the blacks struggle in comparison to ours.

Maybe people are saying that we all have struggles. And SOMEONE hates every single one of us! SOmeone out ther hates all black people, someone hates all gay people, someone hates all Jewish people, someone hates all men, someone hates all skinheads.

No matter what group you fit in someone hates you jsut for being the way you are....and that is sad, very sad.
