The problem is that they're obsessed with quantifiable product. A book sells a million copies? Film it. A tv show that's run for thirty years that everyone recognizes? Film it. Most popular ride at Disneyland? Of course!
With production costs escalating, the prevailing attitude is that spec scripts don't fly as often because there's no built-in audience.

i know its so bloody annoying! the only movie that i thought was completely original was pirates of the carribean but then they made another one! i really liked the second one aswell...but thats not the point :)
