How can you tell the difference between a girl turtle and a boy turtle?

A boy turtle's tail is longer than the females. Also the two fore claws on the turtles front feet are longer than the rest while a females all her claws are the same length.
Also the cloaca is in a different location. In zoological anatomy, a cloaca is the posterior opening that serves as the only such opening for the intestinal, urinary, and genital tracts of certain animal species.
On a male the cloaca will be further down the tail while a females is closer to the butt.

I'm told that this is something that boy turtles and girl turtles can do quite easily, but it's a little more difficult for humans. On the other hand, they probably have difficulty telling us apart, too.
It depends largely on the species, as different kinds of turtles have different types of shells, and the shell is one of the distinguishing features.

I'm not sure about all turtles..... but if you have a painted turtle the eye color is a good indication as to what gender it is....... red eyes=boy, brown/yellow eyes=girl ... I used to raise painted turtles

That's easy, you get the turtle and turn it on its back. If it's not a boy, it most certainly be a girl.

male turtles have a dent in the bottom shell, females bottom shells are somewhat flat.
