A confrontation between two people, or even two countries, is difficult or sometimes impossible to avoid, if one side is determined to start the fight. You can only run and hide or try diplomatically to find solutions for so long until at last you find yourself having to physically defend yourself. Even passive resistance can result in getting pummelled, bombed, or otherwise physically assaulted. No matter what action you take, if one side is determined to start it, you will eventually be forced into war and must defend yourself.

Your teacher is baiting you.
What that statement ultimately means is that violence/war is inevitable and the is only solution to this situation (or any, I don't know what context the question was asked in).
If you try to avoid war, your enemy will just build up more and more forces until, serving him and not you, obviously.
It's either kill or be killed. It's too absolute and narrow-minded of a view.
One argument to this would be to look at the US and Soviet Union during the cold war. The US and Russia never actually fought each other, they just built up stockpiles of weapons and manipulated smaller countries...but outright war between the two *was* avoided. Eventually, the economy of Russia collapsed and the cold war ended...proving that you can wait out your enemy rather than fight him and achieve the same result.
Another theory that balks this would be M.A.D., or Mutaually Assured Destruction. It means that I have weapons that will kill you, like an entire nuclear arsenal. You have enough to kill me, too. If I launch, then you will too...then we'll all be dead. It's pointless...and so war is avoided because we want to beat each other, but not be totally annhiliated in the process.
You might decide that compromise can prevent war, but I think that is part of your teacher's point...you can bribe N. Korea to stop trying to produce long-range missiles, but it doesn't change the fact that they don't like you and will just postpone the inevitable confrontation.
Just some thoughts, hope that helps.

This is a quote from Niccolo Machiavelli in The Prince except Machiavelli wrote to the advantages of others.Machiavelli applies the analytic tools of science to politics to determine the best way to rule effectively. Read the biography about Machiavelli on widipedia( site is below). It should give you some insight. Essentially he is saying you can't avoid war and if postponed the enemy will gain an advantage. Whether that is true or not is up to you.

it means (i would say) that if you hold off then your enemy has time to build a defence. you should look up the book the art of war which could help.look for examples of wars or battles where the attacks were held off or postponed and see what happened or could have happened. one example (i think) is the battle of stalingrad. get examples of rushed wars or battles as well - charge of the light brigade maybe. there is also a famous saying about war - there is no such thing as peace......it goes on but i can't remember the rest.good luck!

Blow your teacher away by starting out with WHY there is no avoiding war, something like: The human race is practicing warfare, by killing each other, and have been doing so for centuries. When the crafts from the darkness above begin eliminating cities, with simply one lazer beam of brightness, only then will we realize we've waisted all of our efforts.... Don't do this word for word, it's just something I thought up just now.

You cannot just stop the fight, you need to finish what you started, if you delay your amitions, you will be in a disadvantage. Think smart and be ahead of the enemy at all times. Or else the enemy will strike you first and there is no turning back.

You might start by researching the causes of all the major wars of the past century...WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf Wars, etc. Then ask yourself "what would have happened if no one had intervened.
