You're not missing much. I can't stand them either.
I think they're extremely overrated and they sound out of tune all the time because they're all either drunk or high when recording in the studio.
You want to hear great older music, listen to Pink Floyd. Grateful Dead sucks.

I think some of the songs are amazing....Box of Rain, Uncle John's Band, Peggy O....absolutely beautiful...and the space drumming is very cool as well. I like the fact that they didn't bow down to the big mainstream recording companies...they did their own thing.

if you are listening to the dead from a musicians POV, then you are bound to be left feeling frustrated and confused. my hubby is a guitar man, and he gets so frustrated with me for liking them.
while it is true that there are probably lots of their fans are hippies and stoners (ah, i miss being a stoner hippie!), the big thing about the dead is that it is all about how the music makes you feel. if you are not into them, that's fine. each and every one of us has a band, or two, or ten, that we like who aren't exactly world renowned artists. but you like them anyway. why? because something in the music moves you.

IT'S THE DEAD HEADS.
The fans of the dead (who romed the coutry with them in the 60's-the 70's) have kept the Greatful Dead legend alive.
That and I think you need to be baked but I dont know about that.

You need to be on a major trip to enjoy their music.
I am not a big fan of them either but there are certain songs that I do like
Touch of Gray, Hell in a Bucket, Terrapin Station

What did the Deadhead say the first time he went to a Grateful Dead concert straight? "Man, this music sucks!"
You're not missing anything.

live stuff is better, you float with it, it's so intricate and subtle, lyrics often totally deep and meaningful, may not relate to your world though. you may need some chemical help to differentiate all the different layers. build up crescendos, and explosions just toy with you too.

First you need to get high, and then perhaps down a shroom then you might understand! No no... really... they are great, but most people who are really into them are stoners.
