The Odometer on recent vintage autos is run through the electrical system of your car. Why then if your battery is disconnected for any reason does the odometer not zero out. If there is a battery back up for these periods, how long will it last?

By Federal law, the odometer is required to maintain an accurate history of the miles the automobile has traveled.

The odometer uses a MVM chip (non-volatile memory) and does not require the power be applied to maintain it. They are also tamper resistant.

The manufacturers were required to design this feature into the cars before they were allowed to sell electronic odometers.

Just like the clock display on a computer, the odometer has a system to maintain its information regardless of the state of the vehicle's power supply.

well if you unplug your computer from the wall and then plug it back in again is all your information still there?. Works the same way. Kind of like a small hard drive that records and stores computer data such as mileage and engine codes.

Because its gear run and not set to rewind or set back. The newer LED ones must have a backup battery though.

It is digitally ingrained in the computer. It will never forget the mileage no matter how long it is unplugged.
