now when I try to do this, I receive the following message: 'If you change the file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it? yes/no
In the beginning when I saw this message, I would click Yes .. and never could open the pic or file, etc. after that. So I lost some of my pic's .. a few. This only happens in Microsoft Word. Does anyone know why and HOW CAN I STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING? Thank you up front for any help on this matter. : )

The filename extension is the part after the last ".". It tells Windows what kind of file it is.

MS Word tries to be helpful by defaulting the extension to ".doc", which indicates a Word document. (I will bet your lost pics are named "xxxxxxx.doc", where xxxxxx is what you put in! They are not lost. Just Rename they again with xxxxx.jpg or whatever picture file type you were using.).

MS Word may not be the best place to Rename if you cannot override the default .doc. Just right clicking the pic in Windows Explorer and choosing Properties gives you a Rename function with flexibility. You need to keep whatever the original file extension type is.

If you want a different picture type, you have to use photoediting software. Then you can choose a different file extension for pics, and the software will convert the pic to it.

Good Luck

That is because you're not just changing the name, but removing the file extension also. If you have a file named "poopy.bmp" and then rename it "lovepoopy" without the ".bmp" then Windows will no longer know what type of file it is. File extensions are very important. You have to keep that part.

your changing to much of the file name. go to "my computer" then go "tools" and " folder options" then click the "view" tab. find where it says "hide extensions for known file types" take the lil check off. that way when it shows the name of the file, u can change the name of it with out changing the extension. leave the .wrd in and change everything else

When you change the file name, only change the name not the extension. for example:

picture.jpg ony change picture, but leave the .jpg alone. .jpg is the file extension. without the file extension, your computer won't know what program to open the file in.

Renaming a pic shouldn't be a problem, it's when your trying to change a file type that that will tend to occur. Try saving pics outside of ms word and renaming before importing to word?

Dont change the extension, the part after the . or dot. That's whats causing the problem. When you do the rername, then press "home" on the right side and use the arrow keys/delete or backspace
