Actually we've done it. Haven't tried 3somes yet, but we have played with other couples. I guess people can think what they like about it, but there's so much more to it than what they've heard or imagined.
Do yourself a favour, anyone who is considering swinging/swapping: READ UP ON IT!! You need to really, really, really get informed about all those details that will crop up at the most inopportune times. It raises questions about one's self, one's relationship, and one's partner. Very scary questions, like: "Is our relationship based on more than just the sex we provide one another?", and " Would my spouse choose to marry me again...today?", and "What if we learn all there is to know about one another, and find out that, in the end, we just don't like each other?"
Another tip: If this is something that you're asking of your partner, you're going to end up in a world of hurt. Instead, it should be a gift that you are giving him or her, without expecting them to return the favour. If their freedom is given with love, and they are made to understand the responsibility that comes with that gift (to not take advantage of you, or use it against you), they will (or SHOULD) love you for your selflessness. Then they will want to return the favour, in their own time.
Sounds really hokey, but I'm on the level. It doesn't work for everyone, but for some very lucky people, it works marvelously. My husband and I have experienced unparalleled emotional intimacy with one another, often just after we've had an encounter with other people. No BS. :D

Have done it. I lost my really close friend to it, it caused drama, but still talk to her maybe twice a year, but still talk to her ex occasionally. If you plan on doing this, you shoudnt do it with close friends.
