I am planning on buying the new Bayliner 185. This is going to be my first boat and for $13,000 I think this is a good deal. I want a new boat because I am planning on having this boat for a while. Here is the link to the boat http://bayliner.com/runabouts.asp?modelid=54097&year=2006

You will get a lot of pros and cons about buying a Bayliner.
FRP/fiberglass boats are pretty much one as good as the other in the same price/size catergory.
You can run the best fiberglass boat into a submerged log and rip a hole in the hull as quickly as the cheapest boat on the market. There is VERY LITTLE if any difference between the way the best boat manufacturer builds the hull and the cheapest boat manufacturer does it. The difference is in the quality of appointments and finish work on a boat.
Anyone who tells you different is most likely someone who doesn't know the real facts about FRP.
The world is full of experts who don't know what they're talking about.
By the way, to some extent I agree with scottfamilytribe reply.
I'd say that of the many boat owners I know, most of those boats are docked or drydocked much of the time.
You need to weigh one consideration against the other.

Buying new is a losing proposition for any boat. A bayliner is a bottom of the line boat. It will serve fine for most people but do not take well to abuse or novice mistakes. I always like the simplest boat to do the job because you have to maintain it. Boats like McKee Craft, Wahoo, Edgewater or Boston Whaler will hold up to any kind of abuse and if kept nice will be worth something later on. ry to steer clear of wood coring in any boat. A bayliner will only go down in value and surely fall apart because they use inferior materials. If you plan on lake boating you should be fine buying a new boat but make sure you get your use or moneys worth out of it. If not buy a good used boat (preferably a better boat like Searay which is the same manufacturer but higher quality) so you dont take the depreciation hit. Also new boats are not selling as well (according to Brunswick-maker of bayliner) so if you do buy new fight for your best deal.

I had a new Bayliner a few years ago and really liked it. We never used it after the first year and we even had a boat slip on the lake. With the prices of gas going up I would really think about buying it. By the time you add insurance to the mix, it's costing you more than $13,000.

Go for it. Bayliners are good boats. I have a 18 foot bayliner and a 25 ft bayliners The only thing california was not letting you in the lakes unless you had a 2 stroke or an inboard engine, but luckily we live in Oregon now. Look around you may find a good used boat... and I mean bayliner too..

Do not just go by price. Fiberglass boats weigh more so they use more fuel and are alot more work. Everyone has specials now and in Feb. think about your main use for the boat, storage, what you plan on towing it with & how much where you live & work will you actually get to use it. Ride around alot of guys dreams are sitting in their yard for sale.
