First, please do NOT sand your nails. That will make them weak and prone to breaking, splitting, and you could end up with a nasty break below your quick. If ridges bother you, do NOT buff them away, use ridge filler. Instead of sanding down the ridges, making nails weak - it fills in the gaps, making nails strong.

Second, don't fret the yellow. There are several things you can try:
1. soak your nails in water with lemon juice or lemon slices. The lemon acts as an astringent and will remove stains.
2. soaking nails in warm soapy water with a cup of hydrogen peroxide will also whiten nails and get rid of yellow stains
3. denture cleaner tablets (Efferdent) in a warm bowl of water. Keep your hands in the water at least as long as the tablets bubble, as long as you can is ideal.
4. try a whitening toothpaste (like Crest Whitening). Put it on your nails and leave it on for as long as you can, then brush it away with a soft toothbrush or washcloth. It should lift the stains after just a few uses.

And, as others have stated, always use a clear basecoat underneath colored polish.

In the meantime, you may want to do a French manicure using a nude color with white tips. Good luck!

Yeah ... that will happen. What you do to keep it from happening is to always put 1-2 coats of clear polish on your nails before you paint-on the colored polish. (The discoloration is caused by the fact that the dye in the colored polish is basically soaking into your nails.) Using clear polish on your nails before you put on the colored polish may not 100% keep your nails from discoloring -- but it makes a 99% difference!

But, insofar as the fact that your nails are already yellowed and "how can you fix it", I think you basically have to just let them grow out -- and, in the meantime, use the clear polish as a base-coat (so that your new growth won't be discolored).

The only way I know is to buff it out with a fine emery board. Then use a buffing pad. You should try using a clear base coat as well.

2 days later.....Just got back from a manicure . I asked about discoloration from polish and I was told that a light sanding and buffing was the best way to remove the yellow. Don't file too hard and always use a moisturizer .

well let me guess you painted them black huh? maybe once or twice. well the thing is is that the paint has stained your nails. so all i can say is stop painting them for alittle bit and let your body fix it. you will be surprised on what your body can do for you. i use to have that same yellowish tint, and so i stopped painting my nails for alittle bit and they don't have it any more. i wouldn't recommend painting your nails at all, and if you do, have it be the clear stuff that makes your nails look wet.
GOOD LUCK!!

Use a non yellowing base coat under your polish. And let your nails breathe for a few weeks without any nail polish on, if you wear allot of nail polish. If you want to remove the yellow on your nails, soak your nails in lemon juice.

Stay away from very dark colors, they tend to leave your nails with a yellowish tend. You and have a manicure and start using clear or very light shades and you'll see a difference in time.

1. Always use a base coat
2. A good scrub with a little baking soda and lemon juice will help

You need to put on a protecting base everytime before you paint them. It is a clear paint you can get at a drug store!
