The Mississippi river system is the largest in the United States. It drains pretty much everything between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains, except for some areas around the Great Lakes (St. Lawrence), most of Texas (Rio Grande), and a few small rivers that empty into the Gulf of Mexico. Indeed, the Louisiana Territory purchased in 1803 was defined as the drainage area of the Mississippi west of the river.
