lots of scientists think they KNOW the answer to this one. the absolute truth is that there only theories. the only thing they KNOW is that it does happen. we get a few degrees of wobble all the time.

don't know the position to start up with your medical know-how mate! Pole reversal is a organic occurrence- the magnetic alignment of the rocks on the sea floor comprise files of it going back for thousands and thousands of years- the earth gained't abruptly start up spinning west to east, as there is no medical reason behind it to attain this, till the earth were hit a glancing blow with the help of an merchandise about the dimensions of the moon!

The reversal is due to events in the outer core. There's actually a good comptational model for how this works. It uses 3-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic modeling--it's called the Glatzmaier-Roberts geodynamo model: http://es.ucsc.edu/%7Eglatz/geodynamo.html

Not surprisingly, the cause of the reversal of Earth's field is analogous to the cause of the reversal of the Sun's magnetic field....but there's no causal relationship between the two.

There could be possibilities from the sun's spots, but its a far fetched idea. I believe the the changing of magnetic pole position is inherent to the earth "s ocean motion.
