He doesn't have to be a role model but yes, kids can/and should look at everything he has done for soccer. He has been the best soccer player of the past decade whether you like it or not. Zidane has never been known to be a frustrated person he's always been calm and always seemed very relaxed! Yes there have been times where he ''overreacted'' but we're all human aren't we? So what if he was/wasn't called a dirty terrorist by Materazzi, bottom line, he was insulted very badly. He shouldn't have reacted with a headbutt but if someone insulted me,my family, my honour, a part of who I was I could have done the same thing pretty easily, it's very understandable!!!! In a way he did let his team down/all of his fans/his reputation... but don't worry we will find out what was said to him, and I think that Materazzi will be the most disappointing of the two because he had no right in saying what he said and we all know that it was very bad. He is who he is, he will have to live with what he did, but we should all feel very lucky to have seen him become who he has become! Zidane the great magician... yep, he was one!

She's not an idiot!!!
Her question is legit. Zidane is a football legend and many kids are and will be looking up to him. So is Maradona. Both of them, however, can't be role models based on their behavior, which is something very apart from their soccer skills. But a kid can get confused, and headbutt his friends or do drugs because, after all, Zidane and Maradona the big legends did, too.
Anyway, I agree with you on one thing: Materazzi can't be a role model for our kids either!!!

Nobody can everybody's role model. Zidane has a responsibility to punish the racist which is far more important than the game itself. Fighting racialism is far more important, be it in the final of the World Cup. What happened if Zidane passed the incident timidly. Materazzi, the racist, went away scot-free. Everyone should fight racialism at every point of time of their life and then and there. If sports are more important than social principles then why South Africa was banned for many years for its apartheid policy. So the case of Israel. Zidane should not care for those who are worried for choosing him to be the role model of their kids. Go and find another role model if you do not like Zidane. There is no dearth of role models. Everyone is looking for his role model according his choice. It's not Zidane's fault as he doesn't fulfil the criteria set by others. It 's their fault who choose Zidane to be the role model. Even, bin Laden is the role model for millions of kids!

What Zidane did is inexcusable not matter how many excuses his fans can come up with.
No matter how hurtful a verbal insult is, it's only just words. As a professional, Zidane should have been able to get over it. His childish response may well have cost him and his nation a world championship.

No I don't agree with you. First because there is a criteria for choosing the best football player of the WC apart from technical skills, it is fair-player. And Zidane is not a symbol of that. He doesn't represent the fair-play at all. Let me remind you that the same criteria was used to exclude C.Ronaldo from the best young player prize. And second he should be a role model for children. Or do you like your children act like him one day? At the age of 34 acting that way without thinking of the consequences? Being so irresponsible? It is for teenagers to justify themselves by saying 'I was provoked. I didn't thought what could happen'

First, stop yelling at me; I can hear you quite well.
Second, the treu mark or a mature man is not to fall into the trap laid by Materazzi, but just ignore it.
Since no one is actually saying what words were passed, it becomes apparent it was a trick to get Zidane out of the game.
He put his own selfish needs (revenge) over that of the team (ultimate victory) and France paid the price for that.

I agree with fragolina, dukalink and ratboy. Kids look up to these guys! They see them as heroes. This was not a good example he set for the children of the world. He would have been the better man had he just ignored Materazzi's words.
