I've heard that you can get a book called something like Divorce for Dummies kind of thing that will give step by step instructions to ensure you get what you're supposed to.

There are free forms available through the internet that can be filled out and filed with the court for a small fee. ONLY do this if no children or real property are involved. Otherwise you must get a lawyer to make sure your rights are protected.

only if you both agree on EVERYTHING and there is no children involved and no house.
If there is children involved you have to do a child support worksheet unless he or she is willing to forgo the child support or agree to pay a certain amount - but of course, this would all have to be put on paper and I would suggest a notary. If there is a house...do the same thing...write everything down and split it up accordingly and to everyones satisfaction...and get a notary.
I know this because I did it myself and I just did it for my sister who does have a house and they were in agreement on everything. I am a notary and the papers I drew up (which by the way can be found on the internet) were considered legal papers. You just take them to the court house and file them. Some states have filing fees...some do not. You may spend a max total of $100 if you do ALL the paperwork yourself. I ended up spending nothing and the deed is done. It does take a great deal of effort and research. I DO WARN YOU, YOU MUST AGREE ON EVERYTHING. If there is one thing you do not agree on....you need a lawyer.

I did my entire divorce, including custody and separation agreement. (property settlement) Forms are available through your Clerk of Court's office if it permitted in your state. I would suggest if you do the separation agreement you have an attorney review it. The cost will be well worth it.
