To remember the name of the person that they ran down in their hummer.
No, really, it started with gangs pronouncing that they won't forget the killing of one of their members and a pledge that they will retaliate and kill the person that did it.
A lot of people who aren't aware that's how it started and just think it's a nice way to remember a loved one.

As a personal momento to the person who they loved and cared about. Alot of times just little reminders like that can be very comforting after you've lost someone close to you.
