I have a white shirt that I just washed and dried with the rest of my laundry. When I put it in, there were no visual stains on it, but now there is an orange line, about 2 inches, on the front of it! I washed it with other whites or very light colors. It's happened other times with other whites as well. What's going on?

Ah the mystery rust stain. I had the same problem and discovered something I had washed took off the paint in my washer drum. It had become rusty and was leaving little rust spots on my clothing.

Two easy solutions. One, to remove the rust stains, WINK, it is an inexpensive rust remover usually found in the laundry aisle at grocers and discounters. Two, to remove the scratch in the drum, appliance touch up paint, available at the home improvement centers. Just get the color that matches the inside drum and it will prevent the rust from spreading and stop it from transferring to your clothing.

Are you leaving your laundry in the washer for a long time after the cycle is finished? Sometimes zippers and other metal things--like buttons and rivets--if left wet too long against a white shirt, can "bleed" a color that looks a lot like rust onto the white article of clothing. You need to get your whites out of the washer as soon as the cycle is over to prevent this.

I can think of 2 reasons for an orange stain like that.
- Your washer or dryer or a metal item on a different piece of clothing has damage that has led to a rust spot.
- The heat of the dryer is carmelizing a sugar containing stain that was not removed by the washer.

Could be the material or there is something in your laundry that is touching it (not likely). Did it happen exactly the same with the other ones? If so, it must be in the laundry. Use some bleach, follow directions so you don't ruin anything.

Could be rust in the washer or rust in the water. They have detergents that you can use if there is rust present.
