I've always loved seafood and within the past year or so I break out in hives when I eat shrimp. Well, it doesn't happen EVERY time, but on more than one occassion. I purchased them from the grocery store fish section (behind the glass case, where you have to ask for them). These, as the ones previous were cooked shrimp (made pasta with sauce, cooked shrimp with garlic butter to add as a topper). I rinsed them thouroughly under running water before adding to the sautee pan. They smelled sooooo good, I ate one. 15 minutes later starting itching and scratiching and hiving! Since this happened before, I immediately took a benedryl tablet and relaxed for about 30 minutes and they subsided. I love shrimp so, why?

You may be allergic to iodine. Does the same thing happen when you eat fish from saltwater ? Best bet is to see a doctor. I know of a woman that is so allergic to iodine that it could be fatal. I was late getting an answer in but you get the drift.

You can develop allergies to food you have eaten before. It may have something to do with eating too much of it in a short time frame and something in the shrimp triggers an allergic reaction. It may also have something to do with how the shrimp was cooked, unless it was cooked differently each time you ate them. I would go to the doctor to get tested because food allergies are really dangerous. Also, the benadryl may not always work fast enough. If you do decide to only keep taking benadryl, try the liquid because it will work faster.

You may be allergic to shrimp...or you may be allergic to something you are adding...you mentioned garlic butter...etc in preparation. Next time...Buy shrimp that are not at all seasoned....eat several without adding anything. If you react ...your allergy is to shrimp...if not then investigate your cooking additives. By the way....don't forget to have someone with you in case you get short of breath or feel your throat tighten. This is anaphylactic shock and can result in death. It is a common reaction to shellfish allergies. If you feel these symptoms start you need 911 emergency services immediately.

An allergy to shrimp/seafood/iodine is not something to take lightly as you age.
Should you EVER have a medical test/procedure which involves the injection of contrast media, also called contrast or dye, you'll want to let the doctor know of this allergy days before the test. This is necessary so that a preventative course of medication can be taken to lessen or prevent a reaction when you have the procedure done.
Common procedures which may use contrast include a CT (computed tomography) scan, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), or any angiogram (taking pictures of a blood vessel(s).

It doesn't have anything to do with whether or not you love shellfish it has to do with your development of an allergic reaction. It is most likely that your are having a reaction to the iodine in the shellfish. However it could be something else. Until and unless you have desensitization and allergy shoots them I would not eat any shellfish. You might have progressively worse reactions as your body is now sensitized to the shrimp.

You are most likely allergic to iodine, it is not unusual to develop allergic reactions as an adult. The freshness doesn't matter and the amount of rinsing will not help, iodine is a natural component in shellfish.

sometimes ppl have what you call a shellfish allergy and it dosen't happen all the time, just sporatically. If the hives don't bother you, don't worry about it, but if your throat tightens up and you can't breathe i would start to worry
