depression is where you think of something so much that you lose your will to continue on, you just sink into a state of anger and solitude..
anxiety is where you are given a situation and you are so consumed in it you stop making sense to yourself. you can't focus on the topic, and no matter what it is you feel you are constantly being judged, and that you're not good enough.
anxiety to me is worse then depression, because depressed people ususally look at life and say " my life sucks" and only focus on that their life is "horrible." and people with anxiety problems just don't know how to react in certian situations... and they can arise at any time, over ANYTHING!!
you should get treated if you think that you have either. if you feel like hurting yourself, others, or if you are having a hard time adapting to new surroundings and you find yourself freaking out all the time for different reasons... then seek help.

depression is feeling sad constantly. You have a pessemistic outlook on everything. The glass is always half empty.
Depression should be treated as soon as it interferes with daily activites. Talk to your doctor about it, and tlak your problems out with friends.
Anxiety is always being concious about the future and whats going to happen and always feeling liek you could be or should be doing something productive. Also you maybe overly self concoius about how you act or look.
Anxiety should be treated immeadiately because it gets worse and worse fast. Also people who have it usually dont realize they have it. and it more easily interferews with daily activities

Either should be treated when they get in the way of enjoying life. Everyone suffers from them at some point to some level.
They can be co-incident, but generally depression involves a loss of energy, low self-esteem, and negative feelings, while anxiety involves a loss of energy through exhaustion, difficulty sleeping, and fearful feelings.
Both can be treated successfully by lifestyle changes (exercise alleviates much, as does a healthy pattern of sleep and good diet and the reduction of stress), as well as by meditation, verbal therapy and counseling, and ultimately by medication.
See treatment when they get in the way of enjoying life.

Depression is a general sadness. Anxiety is being keyed-up constantly for "no good reason". They both need to be treated by a professional as soon as possible.

The difference is your sad about something and your sleeping for the other. Right?
When you put it that way 'when should this be treated', you admit to having less power than a psychiatrist. Like you can't go to school and be one, like they have all the answers, like they can heal you by putting their hands in your thoughts and changing them around.
The first of what you said (to them) covers sadness, loss and the like. You yourself already know how much you can handle. You know when you can't seem to feel right. So make yourself get up and go for a walk everyday just to get out. And when your out, stop by a counselling agency to sign up to have someone to express your concerns with. If you have a religious person to do this then res[pectfully approach them. When you can't sleep, get up and write all the things your thinking about that are keeping you from sleeping. Then take those to the counsellor or religious person to discuss, and they can prbably solve the problem with you just by talking with you about it.

Depression is constant sadness, avid sleeping, not wanting to be around people, you tend to be lethargic, you don't want to eat, etc.
Anxiety is nervousness, high strung, a sense of paranoia (not to a high degree), that's when your heart beats fast, you feel like everything is going out of control.
Both should just be treated with counseling as soon as you feel it is affecting your everyday life, also when you feel like your physical health is being hurt because of it. Don't go to a psychiatrist necessarily, because they are always ready to prescribe medication. See a physiologist instead, they not allowed legally allowed to prescribe medication.
