to stay in shape for basketball you'd do well to play tennis. much of basketball is lateral movement and quickness, both of which are put to the test in tennis. i'd also recommend soccer...it improves your footwork markedly. i grew up playing soccer and while playing both high school and college basketball i noticed my footwork in the pivot was better than others. i believe that was a direct result of my soccer upbringing. not only that, soccer will build your endurance by leaps and bounds. jumping rope will assist in your burst-ability and with quick leaping to get up for rebounds on second attempts while opponents are coming down on their first leap.

It's always good to find a secondary sport that you play leisurely, so you don't injure yourself. Volleyball is a great one for most basketball players. Or just make sure to keep your self in good health with cardio workouts so you'll be in shape when it's time for "suicides".

if you play a lot of basketball, jumping rope and running up and down hills is perfect. it tones and strengthens your calf muscles for good burst of speed and jumping ability. also good for baseball players who play in the infield.
