Well I don't think the two concepts are mutually exclusive, being well read means you are in touch with and respond to literature. Whereas writing ability has to do with formatting a creative means into a productive & workable idea/concept. But I happen to be of the opinion that everyone would benefit from being well read individuals, it certaintly can't hurt one's existence.

The advantage to being well read is that average words can go a long way when you know the order and context in which to use them. You don't have to use big words to sound smart, but you do have to have proper grammar, spelling and punctuation, and one doesn't learn those things by never picking up a book.

Writing is very similar to reading. The only real difference is that you know what the ending will be.

you know stylistic devices, whether you want to or not. Your mind is learning new ways to write, new styles, new kinds of irony.... you just don't realize it.
And it also expands your vocabulary, unless you are reading like.... three page picture books

My experience has been that I'm able to formulate better arguments, find original things to write about, and grammar seems to be more natural.

The more you read, the better your vocabulary is. The better your vocabulary is, the more intelligent you sound.
