YES! Reformat. Don't waste your time trying to fix a tangled registry.
Use the disks that came with you computer to reload your operating system.
1.Make sure you can reload all programs you paid for. (ex: Photoshop)
2.Go to your XP help and print out reformat instructions.
3.Backup files.
4.Re-install.
5.Download XP updates. This may take 2 or more hours. (high speed)
6.Then load antivirus, antispy, etc.
7.Load all other stuff.
Good luck. You'll be glad you did it.

why not
the only drawback from reformatting is that you have to reinstall stuff but it doesn't take that long. I have done it 5 or 6 times in the past 4 years because my hardware sucks and i'm trying to get a little while longer out of it before i get a new comp
i say reformat it

start -> run -> msconfig click services tab and tick hide microsoft apps then start removing away don't worry you can put back something if something isn't working like you want in the future then click startup and do the same.
Then google hijackthis and send me a report to easoukenka@gmail.com.

It is a big hassle to format your drive. If you think that the problem lies in your registry, download a registry cleaner and try that. There are many free ones out there. Here is one you might want to try. http://www.winclear.com/?hop=pcrestore

remove all programs that load on startup, then in the bios set it to not test the ram every time you start up.
