This is a tradition that goes back scores of years, however there is a pragmatic answer: Before play starts each inning the first baseman throws grounders to the second, third basemen and shortstop.../this is to allow some quick. lively loosening up of the arm of each player as they in turn throw the ball back to the first baseman (obviously the first baseman rarely makes a long throw himself, thus by practical measures the other infielders keep loose...it is a way to keep busy while the pitcher warms up so as the infielders are not merely standing around. When the first batter enters the box, the ball is returned to the dugout, usually to the bench coach or a ball boy. When the third out is recorded, whoever has the ball in the dugout tosses the ball to the first baseman as he runs back into the dugout, it is kept in his glove, and his is ready to handle the 'warm-up grounders' to his teammates at the taking of the field on the next inning. Simple.
It is to warm-up, to to keep the players loose and busy (and it is a tradition). Understand?

When his team finishes batting and retakes the field he'll use the ball to toss to the other infielders for warm up throws. He's tossed the ball as he leaves the field as a courtesy by the players/coaches on the bench or the bat boy, insuring that he is ready for the next defensive inning.

Of course it's the infield warm up ball for the next inning. But why have someone throw him the ball as he's coming off the field? That would be because 1st basemen are generally a little slow/dull wit/ignorant oafs who would forget there own balls if they weren't attached let alone the ball to warm up the infield the next inning..

Well i see that everyone is saying that its used for warm ups next inning...but when olerud played for seattle..i was at a royals game and the ball thrown to olerud after the inning, he would then toss it up over the dug out to the fans.. he probably did this 7 out of the 9 innings.. i dont know why?

You wil get a lot of biased answers. As mine will be. I am a scientologist and I do not believe that god exists the way christians and others do. I believe that love is something natural, that is in the body forever, one that is created by peace on the triangles. Equal balance = love
