My boyfriend's birthday is approaching and i know that i want to get him an MP3 player. From the little bit of research i've done, i've found that Ipods aren't that great. But maybe i'm wrong. Please help!

The problems that i keep hearing about are short battery lives and software that isn't very user friendly. I have no problems at all paying for an item that is quality, but i'm not into buying things solely for their name's sake. Like... i don't want to purchase an Ipod for $400, and then have to buy a $70 battery in 4 months. that's just crazy to me. but please keep your comments coming in...i want to make a well informed decision. thanks!

Creative MP3 players are a good bet. My Creative Zen Microphoto has performed flawlessly. My first Creative Zen Vision M had problems within the first 10 days of owning it. I took it back to BestBuy for a replacement and my new one is performing flawlessly.
No players by any manufacturer are perfect. Read the message boards and somebody has some problem or another with every brand of player. Also, a little known fact is that these players are often not manufactured by the original company. Apple outsources their manufacturing to a completely different company in China. They also contain many of the same chips from one company to the next. This is a way of cutting costs in manufacturing the product. Apple is not designing their own hard drive and chips.
Creative is great because, generally, their products are excellent and they have these features:
User replaceable battery (Zen Microphoto and some other models but not all)
Easy to use user interface (Creative is suing Apple for patent infringment on the UI and Apple has not denied it, they've only counter sued).
Long battery life (4 hours of video on Zen Vision M vs 2 hours of video on iPod 30GB)
Works with subscription music services which permit unlimited rental music downloads for flat fee of as little as $10 a month with a one year pre-paid subscription.
Lower prices for song purchases (79cents, 88cents, 99cents vs 99cents on iTunes)
More choices for places to buy music downloads (Yahoo, Rhapsody, Napster, MSN, Walmart)

Dead wrong. iPod is the industry leader for a reason. They have successfully combined stellar design with high technology.
Not only is the iPod beautiful, but it has the best user interface on an MP3 player, hands down. It does what you want it to do: play music. I cannot recommend the iPod highly enough.
So far, I've had 3 going back to the first iPod released. Each has been a complete joy.

ipods are expensive but they have the best design by far and the best accesories that zen wish they had.
the 30gb is 300 and comes with free engraving and free shipping on the back so you can write happy birthday or i love you or anything else you can think of .
plus they make awesome birthday gifts
if you do get it get a case or it will scratch
and creative zens are not as pocket friendly and ipods design and ease of use is unbeatable
also comp usa has it $20 off
and its a year or 2 when the battery needs to be replaced its not so bad if your bf spends $70 on something he got free especially if you write something speacial on it

I had a Dell DJ that I beloved a lot, and the more recent fashions fit with the performs for particular subscription amenities (meaning you pay a particular quantity of money in accordance to month and get criminal, infinite get proper of entry to to a huge on line library of music) immediately i take advantage of a smaller Sandisk Sansa. that's not a troublesome stress participant and would not carry a lot, notwithstanding it is also well matched with the technologies above, and receives fantastically good battery life. My sister has between the Philips gamers referenced above, it too is well matched with this technologies and from what i have heard works o.k. ;)

They are OK, but there is a Sony MP3 player if you're not going for a low price, it's kinda pricey ($400). iPods are OK, but he'd probably like an iPod because it's just more popular, but Sony's are better.

Go for an iriver clix. It's 2gb, plays music, photos, video, and has a voice recorder, a FM radio, and plays flash games. It has a 24 hour battery! It's only $200. I have one and it is absolutely amazing!!!! Forget ipod! they scratch easeily and don't have spectacular battery life. And you have to stick to their expensive extras. You really pay for there name brand. Check out http://www.anythingbutipod.com for the best selection and info.
