Definitely, but not necessarily a faulty instinct. One thing you MUST understand is that even when people do have you're best interest in mind they can unconsciously tack on they're own view of how things should work out for you and hurt or hinder you in the process. Intent is only as good as it's final result so when someone helps you don't be paranoid. Just make yourself aware of where someones intentions or best interest for you might lead.
