hello,

I'm a novice belly dancer, and I'm having so much trouble with being able to move more than one body part simultaneously-Say If I try combining a hip shimmy with arms/hands and/or belly rolls, I mess everything up and look pretty ridiculous. Any ideas? advice? excercises?

Hehe practice. Lots of practice. Work on those isolations. I just bought Bellydance Fitness for Beginners because I heard it can help with isolations. I've just done the yoga workout so far and it is intense! The better your isolations are the more natural it'll become and then you can start layering what you know. Begin by doing something like snake arms and walking or a shoulder shimmy and walking. It'll come, but it does take practice... and for some of us it takes years! ;) Just have fun and enjoy the process of learning how your body moves.

In a year's time you won't be asking the same question if you practise . The more you practise the better you will become. I am also a novice at belly dancing but luckily I have been involved in many other dancing so it makes it easier for me to follow. I still have problems , though.

Try playings sports or video games! You need to do an activity that forces you to do multiple motions without thinking about it... See if that helps. Try tennis, hockey, or just devise a workout program at the gym that makes you do it...

I've heard it helps to learn another physical action. For example, try learning some yoga positions and slowly integrate moves together. Then go back to your dancing with new perspective.

Practice practice practice. In time you will start to get it and with more time it will become more natural.
