That's an interesting question which I asked myself too!!
I think with him not being allowed to come out an accept the silver medal is because when a player is given a red card, they are not allowed to come back on the field...no exceptions. They could not make an exception for Zidane, since this is a black and white rule. At the same time, he was a good player until his dumb actions, so they can't erase the good that he has alos done...hence the golden ball.

When you are red carded you have to leave the field, not just the game. He still received the silver medal he just wasn't allowed to come out on to the field to get it.
"A player who has been shown the red card (whether directly or as a result of having been shown two yellow cards) is required to leave the field of play immediately and must take no further part in the game; failure to do so will result in forfeit of the game by that player's team"
As for getting the Golden Ball. That is an award voted on by the many sports journalists attending the games. They look at a players performance as a whole and even with his red card they felt he was the most valuable player of the World Cup. France may not have made it out of the Group Stage if it weren't for Zidane.
The award is well deserved.

Always remember 1 thing the journalists casted the votes, based on his career he was voted MVP mainly by the French journalist of course, the 1st 2 games France was not able to score a goal the 3rd Game Zidane was out (red Card) he's 0 for 3 , 4th game played well beat Spain 3-1, played well again beat Sleeping Brazil 1-0, beat Portugal boring game 1-0, Played Italy, Italy completed dominated 1st half , ballots casted already , do you think he was voted on only the tournament?no-way! CANAVARRO was more deserving, 8 soccer players were interviewed during world cup and all said it should have been Canavarro..

no its not zidane's decison to not come out ..
according to FIFA rules if u get a red card u r not allowed to come to the field for the whole game and ceremony after it..
even if france had won that game zidane woudnt have been allowed to come and pick the winners fifa trophy.. thats the rule
and about why golden ball has still been awarded is..
golden ball was decide by the world press and not FIFA so its there decision and hence can be different from wat FIFA bases its performances..

Because he was best player, but he wasn't allowed to come out to accept his silver medal because he got a red card, and he can't get back to soccer field.

It's not that he wasn't allowed he just didn't have the guts to show his face after the most idiotic move anyone has ever done in a Final of the World Cup....he should be ashamed of himself!!!!
(he didn't even go to a dinner held by the french minister)

he was allowed. he just didn't come out because (as he told the people in the locker room) he didn't feel he deserved any medal.
